Delivery Of First Major Vaccine Of Pfizer Is One Day Late

350,000 doses of the vaccine were scheduled to be delivered on Monday, but a logistical problem at the Pfizer plant in Belgium has made it impossible

The first batch of 350,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine , which was expected for Monday, will not finally arrive until Tuesday due to a delay in distribution by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

The company has informed the Ministry of Health that the delay is due to a problem in the loading and shipping process that occurred at its factory in Puurs (Belgium), the headquarters from which vaccines are distributed throughout Europe.

According to the Ministry of Health, Pfizer informed authorities on Sunday night that the delivery of the compromised vaccine consignment was delayed until next Tuesday . In addition to Spain, seven other European countries would also be affected by the delay in the delivery of new doses of the Comirnaty vaccine .

The delay, which is due “to a problem in the loading and shipping process, ” has already been corrected, as the pharmaceutical company has guaranteed to the department headed by Salvador Illa.

“The next delivery of vaccines will be delayed a few hours and will arrive in Spain on Tuesday, December 29, for the continuation of the vaccination throughout the national territory,” said Health, citing information received from the pharmaceutical company.

Sources from Pfizer Spain have indicated to EL MUNDO that the delay has been due to “a minor logistical incidence” that has forced them to reschedule “a minimum number” of shipments.

“The incident has already been resolved and these deliveries are being distributed , ” emphasize the aforementioned sources, who emphasize that “no incident related to the manufacture of the vaccine has been reported.”

Last Sunday the vaccination campaign against Covid started in Spain , with a shipment of almost 10,000 doses that arrived on Saturday from Belgium.

According to the planned plan, in the coming weeks weekly batches of 350,000 doses will arrive until the 4.5 million vaccines reserved for Pfizer for vaccination (two doses are needed) of 2.3 million Spaniards are reached, the members of the group priority vaccination .

The aim is for this group, made up of the most vulnerable people and health workers, to be vaccinated before spring begins. Then, the vaccination of the rest of the groups established in order of priority will begin.

In the next few days, another vaccine, that of the American Moderna, is expected to receive the green light from the regulatory authorities . On January 6, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will issue an opinion on the product, predictably favorable, which will start the authorization process.

The products developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca and the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine are also in the final stages of the review process.

The objective of Health, as the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, has recalled in recent days, is to achieve that around May or June around 15 or 20 million Spaniards have been immunized.

The first people to receive the Covid vaccine in Spain were Araceli Hidalgo , 96, a resident of the Los Olmos de Guadalajara center for the elderly, and Mónica Tapias, a nursing assistant and worker at the center.

The beginning of the vaccination process in Spain marks “the beginning of the end” of the pandemic , but no one relaxes, “because this is not over. We must keep our guard up, prudence and protective measures,” he said yesterday in his appearance before the media Salvador Illa.

In his speech, Illa also highlighted the “worrying upward trend” observed in the data of many communities since last week. “After 8 or 9 weeks with a decrease in almost all the parameters, from the accumulated incidence, to the admitted or the deceased, the trend has been reversed again for a few days,” for which he asked to remain vigilant and not neglect contagion prevention measures.
